When Lisa Pike Masteralexis and Mary A. Hums got together to write the latest edition of their cornerstone sports management textbook, they realized the world had changed.

“Across the board there’s been changes in broadcasting, in how people consume sport generally,” says Hums. “By the time this book is published there’s going to be something we haven’t even thought of.”

Hums’ statement is earnest, but Masteralexis and Hums, who sat down for a wide-ranging interview in advance of the release of Principles and Practice of Sport Management, Seventh Edition, absolutely have their bases covered.

See what they had to say:

The two one-time colleagues-turned-authors have decades of experience in the sports management industry, both professionally and academically, and have observed the changes in real time.

They discuss the billion-dollar industry that is esports. (Their book contains an entire chapter devoted to how to teach management of this burgeoning, international industry.)

They dive into a conversation about post-Covid event management. They discuss how sport law has changed: student athletes are newly empowered through social media and have better control of their own name, image and likeness.

“That would cause us to have more legal considerations in those areas” [in the new edition], says Masteralexis.

The book contains updated lessons across the exciting industry, but most of all, it promises to bring real-world industry experience to students in the classroom.

“Think back to when you were a student,” Hums says, “what do you remember from your professors? The stories they told about when they worked.”

Qualified instructors are invited to download a digital review copy of Principles and Practices of Sport Management, Seventh Edition in advance of course consideration.
