5 Stars! Doody's Review Service (1st Edition - Perfect Score of 100)
"...jam-packed with concise and well-written information."

Revised and updated with the latest data in the field, Essentials of Human Disease, Second Edition is a consolidated and modified version of the very successful An Introduction to Human Disease, now in its Ninth Edition. This book is designed for students who have limited time to master basic disease concepts. It covers the essential structural and functional characteristics of common and important diseases, as well as the principles of diagnosis and treatment.

The book is organized into two main sections. The first section deals with general concepts and with diseases affecting the body as a whole. The second section considers the various organ systems and their diseases. Each chapter begins with learning objectives, followed by a brief review of the anatomy and physiology of the organ system discussed, then a systematic survey of the pathology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and principles of treatment of the diseases covered.

Leonard Crowley, MD-late of Century College, University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview

Dr. Leonard Crowley was an experienced physician and educator based in the Minnesota twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. He had a broad background in both the practice of medicine and the education of nursing students and undergraduate students in allied health professions, as well as medical students and graduate students in health related professions. Dr. Crowley received a M.Sc. degree from Ohio State University and an M.D. degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Following graduation he received additional training at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Presbyterian Hospital in New York, and at Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. He held faculty appointments in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Vermont and Ohio State University, and in the Department of Family Practice and Community Health and in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota.  He was also an Honorary Medical Staff Physician at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.  His most recent faculty appointment was in the Biology Department at Century College where he was actively involved in teaching undergraduate students in various health-related subjects, including his very popular course dealing with human disease pathophysiology,  pathology, clinical manifestations, and principles of treatment.

Dr. Crowley's interest in undergraduate teaching dates back to his early experience teaching nursing students at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York when he was a resident physician in the Department of Pathology. He combined his interest in undergraduate teaching with his medical practice throughout his professional career.

  • Essentials of Human Disease, Second Edition by the late Leonard Crowley, MD just earned a perfect score of 100 and 5 stars from Doody’s Review Service.

Reviewer Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT, from William Beaumont Hospitals writes that it’s “still jam-packed with concise but well-written information.” In addition, this “excellent book,” he continues, “would be a valued asset in any program requiring a short course in physiology,” and a “terrific resource for public and college/university libraries as well.”

The text, a consolidated and modified version of the hugely successful An Introduction to Human Disease, Ninth Edition, is designed for students who have limited time to master basic disease concepts.

    Read more review excerpts:

“Each chapter begins with learning objectives followed by a brief review of anatomy and physiology of the organ system. The book provides a systematic survey of the pathology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and principles of treatment of specific diseases. Key terms are bolded and numerous images, tables, illustrations, and case studies illustrate the text. Each chapter ends with a chapter review, questions for review, supplemental reading (references), and interactive activities. This edition contains updates on ultrasound, HIV, the latest data and statistics, and includes new information on renal transplantation and BMI data from the USDA. The book also features an online companion.

This is an excellent book, with an appealing layout and easy-to-read format. [It] would be a valued asset in any program requiring a short course in physiology, and would be a terrific resource for public and college/university libraries as well. With the sad and recent passing of Dr. Crowley, it is hoped that new authors will continue with future editions of this excellent book.”
