Overview

Aquatic Biology and Natural History  are subjects of interests to many, whether they be related to one's vocational education, one's avocation, or purely to one's appreciation for the living order of the world. This book has been written not only for entomologists, ecologists, and students of aquatic entomology, but also for sport fishermen, naturalists, and environmental assessment specialists. For those who may not have some vested interested in nature and ecology, this book will provide a pictorial introduction to some of the most fascinating life forms on earth and, hopefully, "wet" the appetite for understanding the aquatic insects, their environment, and their relationship to human life.

ShowKey Features

Over 1,000 original illustrations, including 124 full-color paintings -- insect art of the finest quality currently being produced.
Coverage of all insect families and genera important to fly fishing. The use of keys that include exquisitely detailed drawings to facilitate quick and easy identification of insect families.
Comprehensive treatment of the biology of all life stages of aquatic insects, including terrestrial as well as aquatic stages.
Use throughout the book of common insect names familiar to the sports fisherman in addition to the use of scientific names.
Epigraphs that accent discussions throughout the book. These excerpts from poetry and prose as well as from classical anglers' and naturalists' writings serve as reminders of the eternal human fascination with insects, their symbolism, and their environments.

Chapters on special topics not found in other books on aquatic insects:

  • shore-dwelling insects (including marine species)
  • insects associated with aquatic vascular plants
  • residents of tree holes and plant cups
  • aquatic arachnids
  • freshwater crustaceans

Rounding out the book are additional chapters on adaptations for living in water:

  • the basics of insect structure, memamorphosis, and classification
  • ecologically related non-insect groups of invertebrates
  • and methods of collecting
References at the end of most chapters to provide the reader with sources of more detailed or specialized information.
A "Guide to Fisherman's Mayflies of North America" -- an appendix that correlates for the first time the vast and often confusing array of common fisherman's names with up-to-date scientific nomenclature.
A comprehensive glossary at the end of the book for readers unfamiliar with some of the terminology.
