Kevin A. Bybee, MD is a board certified cardiologist and in on staff at the St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. He serves as Medical Director of Cardiology at St. Luke’s South Hospital and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
Dr. Bybee received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was the recipient of the Mayo Internal Medicine Outstanding Achievement Award. Dr. Bybee went on to complete his fellowship in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic where he received numerous awards for his accomplishments in clinical medicine and research. While still a cardiology fellow, Dr. Bybee became nationally and internationally known for his pioneering research on the Broken Heart Syndrome, which is also known as Stress Cardiomyopathy.
Dr. Bybee holds board certifications in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and nuclear cardiology with clinical interests in clinical cardiology, nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular disease in women. He is a physician member of the Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City. The Kauffman Women’s Heart Center was the first heart center in the U.S. developed to soley address the unique aspects of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment in women. Dr. Bybee has published over 35 research articles in the peer-reviewed literature. His research interests include the Broken Heart Syndrome, nuclear cardiology and novel cardiovascular effects of statin medications.

Michelle L. Dew, MD is a board certified staff cardiologist at the St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. She received her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She completed her internal medicine training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed her fellowship in cardiology at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Dew practices general cardiology with a special interest in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. She is a physician member of the Murial I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center at the St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. Dr. Dew has participated in multiple research studies in the field of cardiovascular disease in women and was awarded a grant from the Federal Drug Administration to study unique aspects of cardiac stess testing in women.
As a general Cardiologist, Dr. Dew enjoys all aspects of Cardiology. One of her favorite areas of focus includes Women’s cardiac issues with a special emphasis in education. Speaking to community groups is a favorite activity and empowering patients with avenues to improve health and lifestyle is a much loved ongoing endeavor.
Stephanie L. Lawhorn, MD-Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart and Vascular Institute, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri
Stephanie Lawhorn, MD is a board certified staff cardiologist at St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. Her medical career began with a bachelor of science degree in nursing at the University of Kansas Medical Center where she graduating #1 in her nursing class. After practicing for several years as a critical care nurse, Dr. Lawhorn enrolled as a medical student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she subsequently received her medical degree. She completed her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Kansas. During her training she was inducted into the honorary medical society of Alpha Omega Alpha.
Dr. Lawhorn remained in academic medicine and was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas in the division of cardiology until 1991 when she joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Health Sciences in Little Rock. During her tenure at Arkansas she was Director of the Cardiovascular Laboratory. She became UNOS certified and was instrumental in developing the cardiac transplantation program at the University of Arkansas and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock. Dr. Lawhorn left Arkansas in 1995 to join the St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.
Dr. Lawhorn is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Adult Echocardiography. Her specialties in cardiology include women’s cardiac health, heart failure, cardiac transplantation and echocardiography. She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow of the American Heart Association, a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Lawhorn also holds memberships in the Heart Failure society, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, American Heart Association of Women in Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography and the Society for Vascular Ultrasound.
Dr. Lawhorn has presented abstracts at both regional and national meetings in the area of heart failure, echocardiography and stress testing. She has served as the primary author and coauthor of multiple research publications and has acted as co-investigator on several major multicenter heart failure trials. Dr. Lawhorn is a member of the cardiology staff at the Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center at the St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.
Tracy L. Stevens, MD-Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart and Vascular Institute, Professor of Medicine, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri
Tracy L. Stevens, MD, FACC is a Board Certified Cardiologist with Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants and is on staff at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. She is the Julia Irene Kauffman Endowed Chair for Women’s Cardiovascular Health and Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
Dr. Stevens received her MD degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. She is the recipient of the UMKC Take Wing Award and Alumni Spotlight Award. She completed her Cardiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, where she was also the National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Research Fellow, in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Stevens was awarded the Mayo Clinic Outstanding Achievement Award in Cardiovascular Disease, as well as the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association Donald C. Balfour Award for Meritorious Research. She is the recipient of the American Heart Association Young Investigators Award.
Dr. Stevens’ involvement in professional activities includes prior Presidency of the American Heart Association, Greater Kansas City Division, and Councilor of the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. She is the Medical Director of the Saint Luke’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center; recognized as the first women’s heart center in the United States and recipient of the Inaugural Woman’s Day Red Dress Award. In addition to preventive cardiology, Dr. Stevens is actively involved with heart failure and transplantation. She has served as Medical Director of Cardiac Transplantation and on the National Cardiac Transplant Research Database Executive Committee.
In collaboration with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Stevens facilitated the visit of former First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush, to Kansas City to promote the efforts of the Heart Truth Campaign. Dr. Stevens was an invited guest to the White House to attend the proclamation signing by former President and Mrs. Bush in support of the Heart Truth Campaign. She was also recognized at a separate White House reception as a pioneer in promoting women’s cardiovascular health. She is the recipient of the WomenHeart Wenger Award for her contributions to women’s heart health. She serves on the Heart Health Advisory Board for Woman’s Day Magazine, Scientific Advisory Council for WomenHeart and is a National Spokesperson for the American Heart Association.
Dr. Stevens is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Medical Association, WomenHeart, Washington, D.C., and the Mayo Alumni Association. She is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology.
