HazMat Online
is a series of online modules that brings Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations level material to life with interactive audio, video, Flash™ animation, photographs, illustrations, and case-based scenarios. HazMat Online is designed to enhance students learning experience by allowing them to experiment with key concepts and skills in the safety of a virtual environment.

Students progress through the didactic portion of each module online, followed by an interactive review of the material to evaluate retention of key concepts presented.

HazMat Online can be used as:

  • A review tool to assess students' progress and clarify more challenging subjects

You can access HazMat Online in many ways:

HazMat Online covers the Awareness and Operations levels of NFPA 472, Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents, 2002 Edition.

Organized in seven modules, HazMat Online uses audio, video, Flash animation, photographs, illustrations, and case-based scenarios to bring the material to life. Students progress through the didactic portion of each module online, followed by an interactive review of the material to evaluate retention of key concepts presented. The modules include:

Hazardous Materials: Overview - This module is designed to give you the basic information required to recognize, respond to, and take initial action at a hazardous materials incident.

Hazardous Materials: Properties and Effects - This module is designed to provide an understanding of the physical properties of the chemicals involved in a hazardous materials incident

Hazardous Materials: Recognizing and Identifying the Hazards - This module focuses on how to identify and obtain necessary information on hazardous materials incidents. Recognizing the incident as involving hazardous materials based on information from the dispatcher, knowledge of the response area, and visual, auditory, or olfactory clues will help you take proper action at the scene.

Hazardous Materials: Implementing a Response - This module will teach you to initiate the notification of agencies and resources that will join the response or help with technical support.

Hazardous Materials: Scene Safety and Control - This module discusses the safety precautions that you must take at a hazardous materials incident. It will provide the critical information on scene control, site management, and personnel accountability.

Hazardous Materials: Response Priorities and Actions - This module offers options for mitigating a hazardous materials incident including evacuation, confinement, containment, absorption, dilution, and dispersion.

Hazardous Materials: Decontamination Techniques - This module discusses decontamination, which is the process of removing contaminants from people, equipment, and the environment.
