Overview

NEW THIRD EDITION AVAILABLE AUGUST 2011

By emphasizing diseases, programs, health systems, and health policies, this detailed revision helps readers understand the wide range of global public health issues and the various approaches nations adopt to deal with them. International Public Health: Diseases, Programs, Systems and Policies, Second Edition explores the public health problems facing low- and middle-income countries today, and identifies their three greatest challenges: reproductive health, infectious disease, and nutrition. Containing case studies throughout and discussion questions at the end of each chapter, this book discusses emerging health systems, their regulation, financing, and management. With an emphasis on the role of agencies in promoting health, this title illustrates the importance of health on the economic development of a nation, and the reciprocal impact of development on health status.

  • "This manuscript is well-written and well-organized.  Every chapter provides the most up-to-date information, covering mostly the frontier of the fields, and written by international experts in the field.  It also covers some emerging important issues in international health.  One of the strengths of this textbook is the many examples presented in each chapter, which are very useful tools in helping students to understand the topics."

—Manuscript reviewer from the Department of Public Health, Oregon State University

  • "I felt the manuscript was comprehensive, covering a good range of topics."

—Manuscript reviewer from the Department of International Health, School of Public Health, Loma Linda University

  • "The uniqueness of this textbook is the sensitivity to the situation in lower income countries.  It does not at any point make of the West a yard stick against which other peoples get measured.  In this respect, it is a step forward towards positive globalism... So far, this is the first adequate textbook for International Health I have examined."

—Manuscript reviewer from Community Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Illinois at Chicago

  • "Overall, I think the text achieves an adequate balance and breadth of coverage with appropriate emphasis on the different topics."

—Manuscript reviewer from the Department of International Health, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University
