About the Book

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and has the worst mortality rate of any cancer. It is very likely that the number of deaths from pancreatic cancer each year will surpass the number of deaths from other more common cancers, such as breast cancer. This groundbreaking new volume is dedicated to helping curb these daunting statistics by providing a knowledge base for clinicians and scientists who want to make a difference for patients both now and in the future. Edited by an eminent team consisting of a medical oncologist, a cancer surgeon and a pathologist, with contributions from over 100 world-class experts in the field, Pancreatic Cancer includes 54 state of the art chapters -- all with full color illustrations. Special “Commentaries,” written by world authorities on the subject, provide expert analysis and counterpoint to selected topics. This definitive reference is the instant gold standard for authoritative information on the prevention and treatment of this deadly disease.

Ralph H. Hruban is a Professor of Pathology and Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and his Doctor of Medicine from The Johns Hopkins University. He continued at Johns Hopkins for his residency training, spent one year as a Fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and then returned to Johns Hopkins to join the Faculty in 1990. Dr. Hruban is the Director of the Division of Gastrointestinal/Liver Pathology and a member of the highly successful pancreatic cancer research team at Johns Hopkins. This team has been responsible for many of the fundamental advances made in our understanding of pancreatic cancer over the last decade. Dr. Hruban’s work has focused on early pancreatic cancer and on familial forms of pancreatic cancer. In addition to his research efforts, he founded The National Familial Pancreas Tumor Registry and helped found the Johns Hopkins Pancreatic Cancer Web Page: http://pathology.jhu.edu/pancreas. This web page serves as a resource to patients and their families, and the users of this web page organized to found PanCAN. Dr. Hruban is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of PanCAN, The Lustgarten Foundation, and The Michael Rolfe Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

"This comprehensive edition is easy to use as a reference and provides exceptionally helpful, well-designed tables, charts, graphics, and photographs. Thus, it is an excellent tool for both the novice and the experienced investigator. In particular, most students and postgraduate trainees would find this a very useful, quick reference for any given component of the field of pancreatic cancer. The hope is to heighten awareness of this horrific disease and to foster advances in prevention, laboratory science, supportive care, and treatment."
