Clint E. Bruess, EdD, CHES-Dean Emeritus, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Professor Emeritus, Birmingham-Southern College

Dr. Clint E. Bruess is Dean Emeritus of the School of Education and Professor Emeritus of Health Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also Professor Emeritus at Birmingham-Southern College. He earned his baccalaureate degree at Macalester College, his master’s at the University of Maryland, and his doctorate at Temple University. Dr. Bruess was a professor at West Chester University, Towson University (also department chair), and The University of Alabama at Birmingham (also department chair and later Dean of the School of Education), before becoming Division Chair and Professor at Birmingham-Southern College. He also directed the School Health Education Project for the National Center for Health Education for 3 years.

Dr. Bruess has coauthored more than 15 textbooks in the areas of human sexuality, sexuality education, personal health, and school health programs. In addition, he has published numerous articles in professional journals and served in elected and appointed positions for the American School Health Association (also a Fellow), American Association for Health Education (also a Fellow), and Society of Public Health Educators. Dr. Bruess continues to review professional articles for Health Education, The Journal of School Health, The International Journal of Health Education, The American Journal of Health Behavior, and the American Journal of Sexuality Education. He currently teaches a Human Sexuality Course at Samford University and a graduate level Sexuality Education course at the University of Alabama.

Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD, MSW-Answer, Piscataway, New Jersey

Elizabeth Schroeder, Ed.D., M.S.W., is the executive director for Answer, a national sexuality education organization dedicated to providing and promoting unfettered access to comprehensive sexuality education to young people and the adults who teach them.  An award-winning, internationally recognized educator, trainer, and author in the areas of sexuality education pedagogy, LGBTQ issues and curriculum development, she has worked with thousands of youth-serving professionals, adolescents and parents in the United States and overseas.

Dr. Schroeder is a co-founding editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, and has authored or edited numerous publications, including the four-part book series, Sexuality Education: Past, Present and Future.  She is a frequently sought-out spokesperson in the news media on issues relating to sexual health education and youth development. Before joining Answer, Dr. Schroeder worked in school- and community-based settings all around the world, and served as an assistant professor at Montclair State University, the associate vice president of education and training at Planned Parenthood of New York City, and, before that, manager of education and special projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

A national spokesperson on sexuality and adolescent development, Dr. Schroeder has received numerous honors throughout her career, including the Carol Mendez Cassell Award for excellence in sexuality education, the Schiller Prize for her approaches to teaching Internet safety to youth, the William R. Stayton Award “in recognition of outstanding leadership in the field of human sexuality,” and the Mary Lee Tatum Award, given annually to “the person who most exemplifies the qualities of an ideal sexuality educator.”

She holds a Doctorate of Education in Human Sexuality Education from Widener University and a Master of Social Work from New York University.
