Janie B. Butts is Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and teaches classroom and online nursing courses at the doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate levels. Karen Rich is an Associate Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing in Long Beach, Mississippi, and teaches classroom and online nursing courses at the doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate levels. Dr. Rich teaches ethics, public health, quality improvement, and research. She is the co-author of the book Philosophies and Theories in Advanced Nursing Practice, which recently received a 2011 AJN Book of the Year award. Journal articles and book chapters include various topics on ethics and academic and professional issues. She is a peer reviewer for top nursing journals and book companies. Dr. Rich’s doctoral degree is from The University of Southern Mississippi with an emphasis in ethics, and her master's degree with an emphasis in public health nursing and nursing management is from Louisiana State University’s Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed a post-master’s certificate in psychiatric-mental health nursing. Since 2008, Dr. Rich has served in the capacity of Consultant Editor for the international Nursing Ethics journal. Her scholarly interests include ethics with a specific emphasis in Eastern philosophy; virtue; ethics related to communicable diseases and pandemics, especially influenza; and ethics related to nursing student and faculty issues.
