The National Association of EMTs has partnered with Jones & Bartlett Learning and the American Geriatrics Society to develop the second edition GEMS course. A team of experienced EMS educators and clinicians serving as members of NAEMT’s GEMS Committee has designed a course that prepares EMS practitioners to respond to the unique challenges and needs of an older patient. The course aims to empower practitioners with geriatric specific training to help them improve the medical outcomes and quality of life for these patients.

Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), Second Edition builds off the previous edition and includes expanded content that will cover new areas addressed in the National EMS Education Standards, including mobile integrated healthcare and disasters.

American Geriatrics Society

The American Geriatrics Society is a nationwide, not-for-profit association of geriatric health care professionals dedicated to improving the health, independence, and quality of life for all older people. The AGS promotes high quality, comprehensive, and accessible care for America’s older population, including those who are chronically ill and disabled. The organization provides leadership to health care professionals, policy makers, and the public by developing, implementing, and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT)

Formed in 1975 and more than 32,000 members strong, the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) is the nation’s only organization solely dedicated to representing the professional interests of all EMS practitioners, including paramedics, emergency medical technicians, emergency medical responders and other professionals working in prehospital emergency medicine. NAEMT members work in all sectors of EMS, including government service agencies, fire departments, hospital-based ambulance services, private companies, industrial and special operations settings, and in the military. NAEMT represents all EMS practitioners in promoting: • Greater understanding and appreciation by government agencies at the local, state and national levels of the role that EMS plays in our nation's health care, public safety, and disaster response systems. • Pay and benefits that reflects their professional training, responsibilities and dedication. • Leadership at the federal level that fosters and supports the delivery of quality EMS nationwide. • Adequate and sustainable funding for EMS in all locations. • Public policy that supports EMS practitioners and the patients they serve.
