Demetrius J. Porche, DNS, PhD, APRN, FAANP, FAAN-Dean and Professor, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, School of Nursing, New Orleans, Louisiana

Dr. Demetrius James Porche is Professor and Dean of Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana School of Nursing. He holds an appointment also in the School of Public Health at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Nicholls State University and his Master of Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Science from Louisiana State University Medical Center. He completed Family Nurse Practitioner post-graduate coursework at Concordia University Wisconsin. Dr. Porche earned a Doctorate of Philosophy from Capella University in Organization and Management with a specialization in Leadership.

Dr. Porche is certified as a Clinical Specialist in Community Health Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner. He is currently the Chief Editor of American Journal of Men’s Health. Dr. Porche serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal for Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Porche is a gubernatorial appointed member of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Dr. Porche was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

  • I read this entire text cover-to-cover, something that I do not usually do. While it may be more time-sensitive (some sections may need more frequent updates) than other texts, this is the most focused, well-organized and useful text on the fundamentals of health policy that I have seen. The seamless integration of policy research is one example. It creates a solid foundation for advanced policy study. I have been looking for this book for several years!

  • This book covers the same material as other policy books, but the format makes it very easy to use. It moves the reader through definitions of policy, to models, to how the government works, into the tools of politics and policy making, and ends with policy institutes and their role in policy making. Unique features include the accompanying illustrations that support linkages and processes in policy making, the summary points at the end of each chapter, and the straightforward language.

    There are many policy books, including nursing policy books such as Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care, 6th edition, Mason et al.(Elsevier, 2011), which the author quotes. The Mason book, like many others, covers some of the same material but is harder for novices to follow and use. Other books have more in-depth information in some areas, but often are so detailed that novices will be less likely to read them. This book is refreshingly easy to read. And, as the author acknowledges, it has been fashioned from student comments and is done with the novice policy-making nurse in mind.
