Michael R. Privitera, MD, MS-Associate Professor of Psychiatry; Director, Psychiatry Consultation/Liaison Service; Director, Mood and Anxiety Disorder Consultation Service; Medical Director, Strong Family Therapy Services, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York

Dr. Privitera is primarily a clinician, educator and administrator with research experience, whose background had been in the area of Mood Disorders and Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry consultant to Medical/Surgical Units at a University Hospital. Due to numerous workplace violence events in many colleagues – nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physicians, being threatened or assaulted by patients, visitors or family (Dr. Privitera included) despite attempts at respectful care of the patient, a number of University of Rochester colleagues assembled a Workplace Violence Committee. Dr. Privitera co-chaired this committee with Catherine Cerulli JD, PhD for over 6 years. Complexities in operationalizing the information in the literature and the great deficits in specific guidance in the literature, lead the URMC Dept of Psychiatry Chairman, Dr. Eric Caine to suggest and support Dr. Privitera’s efforts to pull lessons learned from the committee into a book. University of Rochester Medical Center Board of Trustees supported his application for part time sabbatical to edit and write for this book.
