Overview

The Pediatric Airway Management DVD Wins a Silver Telly Award!

Emergency management of the pediatric airway requires an understanding of the anatomic, physiologic, and behavioral differences in infants and children. It also requires specific skills that EMS providers do not have many opportunities to practice. This comprehensive, easily understandable text teaches EMS providers how to assess and manage pediatric airway emergencies. Core to this text is the Pediatric Airway Management Algorithm - a chart that teaches the process for assessing and managing any pediatric airway emergency. Each chapter describes a different component of this invaluable tool.

Over 30 million children seek emergency care each year in U.S. emergency departments. Children represent 30% of emergency department patient visits. By contrast, children represent only 10% of all prehospital calls. Of these calls, less than 5% are life- or limb-threatening. Respiratory complaints comprise 10% of all pediatric prehospital calls and 1% of these patients present in cardiopulmonary arrest from both medical and traumatic causes.

What impact do these statistics have on your practice as an EMS provider?

One of the first decisions EMS providers make when assessing a pediatric patient is whether to manage the patient's medical needs in the field or initiate rapid transport to allow for additional management in the emergency department. Certainly patients with severe conditions such as respiratory failure will require immediate field management to ensure adequate oxygenation and ventilation en route to the hospital. The question of whether to intubate a patient in the field versus providing bag-mask ventilation is a complex one and requires knowledge of what intervention is most effective, has the least complications, and which procedure promises a better outcome. The decision about airway management of pediatric patients in the field versus the emergency department will always require careful consideration and is likely to change with new research and collective experience.

ShowReviews

  • The following review appears in the June 2005 issue of JEMS Magazine

Managing a child’s airway in the field under less than ideal conditions can be a stressful experience for paramedics.  This is partly due to the differences in anatomy and physiology of children and adults, but mainly because children represent only approximately 10% of all ALS runs and require airway management much less frequently than adults.  It is, therefore, a challenge for paramedics to maintain pediatric airway skills.

Pediatric Airway Management for the Prehospital Professional by Marianne Gausche-Hill, MD, FACEP, FAAP and colleagues addresses these issues head-on by providing a comprehensive (yet concise), readable, well-illustrated and well-referenced textbook.  Gausche-Hill is an international expert on pediatric airway management, and her expertise – and that of her noted colleagues – is evident.  The text provides practical information on all aspects of pediatric airway management and is part of an integrated learning system that includes text, CD-ROM, DVD and a Web-based course at the practitioner and instructor levels - an ambitious task that is admirably accomplished in 146 pages.

The textbook is truly multi-dimensional and includes case-based scenarios, airway management algorithms, content links to the DVD, evidence-based discussions, color anatomic illustrations and photos, clinical pearls, chapter quizzes and step-by-step photo guides to performing airway management procedures.

Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives, then introduces a scenario, develops a management algorithms for the scenario, discusses the required skill set and the evidence behind the clinical recommendations, illustrates the highlighted procedures/skills, and ends with a scenario review summary, brief quiz, glossary of terms and selected references.  All the essentials, as well as more advanced concepts and skills, are well covered in this format.

The text is clear and well written, and the scenarios are compelling.  It’s easy to read and coveys just the right level for both paramedic practitioners and instructors.  I highly recommend this comprehensive, integrated learning system for all EMS providers who want to master pediatric airway management.
