The following review appears in the June 2005 issue of JEMS Magazine
Managing a child’s airway in the field under less than ideal conditions can be a stressful experience for paramedics. This is partly due to the differences in anatomy and physiology of children and adults, but mainly because children represent only approximately 10% of all ALS runs and require airway management much less frequently than adults. It is, therefore, a challenge for paramedics to maintain pediatric airway skills.
Pediatric Airway Management for the Prehospital Professional by Marianne Gausche-Hill, MD, FACEP, FAAP and colleagues addresses these issues head-on by providing a comprehensive (yet concise), readable, well-illustrated and well-referenced textbook. Gausche-Hill is an international expert on pediatric airway management, and her expertise – and that of her noted colleagues – is evident. The text provides practical information on all aspects of pediatric airway management and is part of an integrated learning system that includes text, CD-ROM, DVD and a Web-based course at the practitioner and instructor levels - an ambitious task that is admirably accomplished in 146 pages.
The textbook is truly multi-dimensional and includes case-based scenarios, airway management algorithms, content links to the DVD, evidence-based discussions, color anatomic illustrations and photos, clinical pearls, chapter quizzes and step-by-step photo guides to performing airway management procedures.
Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives, then introduces a scenario, develops a management algorithms for the scenario, discusses the required skill set and the evidence behind the clinical recommendations, illustrates the highlighted procedures/skills, and ends with a scenario review summary, brief quiz, glossary of terms and selected references. All the essentials, as well as more advanced concepts and skills, are well covered in this format.
The text is clear and well written, and the scenarios are compelling. It’s easy to read and coveys just the right level for both paramedic practitioners and instructors. I highly recommend this comprehensive, integrated learning system for all EMS providers who want to master pediatric airway management.
